Information about Ministry scholarships to complete TESSOL qualifications:

2 September 2014

TESSOL Tuition Fees Scholarships
TESSOL Tuition Fees Scholarships will be once again available for teachers to study towards a TESSOL qualification at the University of Auckland, the Waikato Institute of Technology, Massey University, Victoria University and the University of Canterbury.

Teachers must have at least two years' teaching experience, be permanently employed at a school, and have New Zealand residency and New Zealand teacher registration.

Mainstream teachers as well as ESOL specialists are encouraged to apply, and many schools have more than one teacher completing TESSOL studies at any one time. Each teacher receiving a scholarship is funded to complete two to five core papers (depending on the course) over two years. The scholarship includes the cost of course fees for each paper and $100 for books.

Some feedback from principals of previous participants:
"As we have students from a range of ethnicities, learning about current practices is beneficial to the teachers studying and those with whom they share their learning. The scholarship is very timely as we are looking closely at our ESOL practices and always believe it is important to make informed decisions."
"This is an excellent qualification for teachers. The personal growth is significant and the spinoff for the school considerable. I am totally supportive of this scholarship."
"All of our teachers can benefit from this TESSOL qualification, and it is important to our school that we continue to train teachers to support the many ELLs in our classrooms."

Information packs and application forms are sent to state and state integrated schools with ESOL funded and international fee-paying students by the first week of Term 4. The closing date for the 2015 scholarship applications is 28 October 2014.

The new 2015 application forms will be available on the TESSOL page on the ministry website by October.
